Wolkberg Casting Studios is a South African industrial design and manufacturing company creating innovative architectural surfaces, products, and bespoke design solutions from our proprietary material, Limesite™.

Founded in Johannesburg in 2015, Wolkberg was built on the belief that world-class design, material innovation and manufacturing can come from Africa — and compete confidently on a global stage.

At the heart of Wolkberg is Limesite™, our locally developed high-performance concrete. Through years of research, experimentation and product development, we have engineered a material that allows us to explore concrete beyond its conventional applications, transforming it into refined, tactile and highly considered design products.

Our capabilities extend across architectural tiles and surfaces, wall cladding, precast elements, furniture, lighting, objects and custom-designed products.

But Wolkberg is about more than the products we manufacture. We are a design-led business built around the intersection of industrial design, material innovation, sustainability and African manufacturing.

Sustainability by Design

Sustainability has been embedded in Wolkberg’s thinking since our inception.

For us, responsible design is not an additional feature or a response to a changing market. It has always influenced how we develop materials, design products and approach manufacturing.

This philosophy is deeply embedded in Limesite™.

Limesite™ has achieved a 4-Star Eco Label rating, recognising its environmental performance. Certain Limesite™ formulations incorporate up to 81% recycled material, allowing us to reconsider the relationship between waste, raw materials and high-value design.

Our approach is rooted in the principles of circularity. Limesite™ is designed to be recyclable, while our manufacturing and product-development processes continually explore opportunities to reduce waste, use materials more intelligently and create products with meaningful longevity.

We also believe sustainability extends beyond the composition of a product.

Local design, local manufacturing, skills development and job creation are part of our broader responsibility as a South African manufacturer. By designing and manufacturing in Johannesburg, we are investing in local capability while developing intellectual property, skills and manufacturing knowledge on the African continent.

Longevity is equally important to our philosophy. Wolkberg products are designed to live with architecture rather than follow short-lived trends. We embrace the natural character of our material and the way surfaces develop character and patina through use and time.

Design + Manufacturing Under One Roof

One of Wolkberg’s greatest strengths is our ability to take an idea from concept through industrial design, prototyping, material development and manufacturing within one business.

Our in-house industrial design team works closely with our manufacturing team in Johannesburg. This relationship between designer, material and maker allows us to continually experiment and develop both our own collections and bespoke solutions for individual projects.

Rather than operating purely as a product supplier, Wolkberg works as a design and manufacturing partner to architects, interior designers, developers, hospitality groups and brands.

This makes us particularly suited to projects where designers are looking for something that cannot simply be selected from a catalogue.

We understand that every project has its own architectural language, technical requirements and commercial realities. Our custom design capability allows us to collaborate with clients on shape, texture, colour, scale, application and production to develop products specifically for their environments.

A Different Approach to Concrete

Limesite™ challenges traditional perceptions of concrete.

Rather than treating concrete simply as a structural or industrial material, we explore its ability to create colour, texture, movement, softness and depth.

Our design process often begins by asking what a material could become rather than accepting what it has traditionally been used for.

Through casting, pigmentation, surface development and industrial design, we transform Limesite™ into architectural products that interact with light, shadow, colour and space.

Many Wolkberg products intentionally celebrate the subtle variation inherent in the casting process. These characteristics give our surfaces their tactile quality and individual character.

The result is a material language that feels simultaneously architectural, crafted and contemporary.

Our approach combines industrial design thinking, technology, skilled manufacturing and hand-finishing. This allows us to retain the character and craftsmanship of locally made products while continually improving our manufacturing systems and production capabilities.

We have supplied projects locally and internationally and have been exporting Wolkberg products for close to a decade.

Wolkberg works with architects, interior designers, hospitality groups, property developers, retailers and brands across residential, hospitality, commercial and public environments.

Clients can specify products from our existing collections or collaborate with our design team to develop something entirely bespoke.

Our custom design capability allows architects and designers to work directly with our industrial designers and manufacturing team to explore new forms, surfaces, colours and applications using Limesite™.

We particularly enjoy working with clients who want to push materials beyond their conventional applications and create something distinctive for a project.
